Now is the time to get the work into all the downtown windows!!! We need and many hands as possible in the next couple of days during buisness hours. If you can help please call Tina @ 565-3703 to schedule a time to pick up art. She will have directions for who goes where. And all the supplies you will need. 		<description><![CDATA[Plein Air!  Painting Classes for the Summer Months Susan Martin Spar brings her experience of working in the outdoors in pastels, acrylics and oils to the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center this summer for a series of three independent plein air classes. Students will meet on the first day of each series for an orientation and introduction to plein air work. This will include a demonstration from the teacher and an opportunity for the students to get out their supplies and get to work. Subsequent outings will be to different locations throughout the six or four week period. Locations will be announced at the classes and posted on the PFAC website two weeks in advance of each outing. 		<description><![CDATA[Members and friends of the Port Angeles Arts Council, We are having a meeting at Studio Bob on Wednesday May 1st, at 6pm. Studio Bob is located upstairs at 118 1/2 E. Front St. in downtown Port Angeles, between Lincoln and Laurel Sts, above Sound Bikes &#38; Kayaks. The meeting is free and open to the public. We will finally discuss the results of our fall 2012 session about the state of the arts in Port Angeles. Cathy Haight, who led the Informational Cafe meeting, will present the results. This will lead us into a discussion of future initiatives for the Arts Council.  We will also talk about the Art Shack Gallery, a joint effort of the PAAC and the Juan De Fuca Festival, and Young@Art, exhibiting student work at downtown merchants storefronts the week before the Festival. 		<description><![CDATA[Young @ Art promises to be the biggest and best year ever. Thanks to Tina Smith-O&#8217;Hara, the Port Angeles School District, Betsy Robins, Sandy Long and the Downtown Merchants. But that means we will need more volunteers than ever to hang art, and to take it down. Details: Art hanging dates &#8211; Monday, May 13 through Thrus May 16th. Art will be up for display between May 17th to May 28 Art will need to be picked up and returned May 28, 29 and 30. Volunteers are needed May 13 to 16 to contact the merchant the art is assigned to. To arrange when and where a merchant would like the art installation. To pick up the art from the School District office of Tina Smith-O&#8217;Hara, to put up the display. We request that the SAME VOLUNTEER be the one to return May 28, 29 or 30 to carefully remove the art, take all the tape off windows and carefully remove the tape without damaging it, and returning the art to Tina at the District office. With OVER 35 participating merchants and elementary classrooms participating … the MORE VOLUNTEERS we have the smaller amount of work for each person!!!! It is a joyous project and has generated a great deal of good will in the community between Merchants who have a chance to highlight their business, proud families and students, the teachers, and the community. 		<description><![CDATA[PRESS RELEASE The December meeting of the Port Angeles Arts Council will feature storytelling by Cherie Trebon of the Story People of Clallam County and a presentation by Susan Hamilton, the current Spotlight Artist at the Peninsula College Longhouse Art Gallery. The meeting will take place from 6pm to 7pm on Wednesday, December 5, in the Peninsula College Longhouse. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments and a meet and greet will follow the presentations. According to Port Angeles Arts Council Board member Bruce Hattendorf, these special Arts Council meetings are designed to showcase local arts and artists and to provide networking opportunities for members of the local arts community and for those interested in supporting the arts community. Susan Hamilton is a Haida bead artist whose work is influenced by traditional tribal designs and Alaskan culture and landscapes. She is currently a full time student in Peninsula College’s Associate of Arts Degree Bridge Program, which integrates Native Perspectives into course work. Cherie Trebon is a lifelong storyteller who has been telling professionally since 1989. With the masterful use of her voice coupled with skillful gestures, she draws upon a broad repertoire of folktales, legends, myths, poetry and contemporary stories to transport listeners of all ages to far away places, times, or states of being. She is a member of the Board of the Story People of Clallam County. The Port Angeles Arts Council is dedicated to nurturing the vitality of the arts as an essential ingredient of the quality of life for area residents and visitors. Edvard Grieg  (1843-1907)</p>
<p>Edvard Grieg was a shy little man. He traveled as little as possible, preferring  to stay near his familiar fjords and write music that breathed the spirit of Norway. Although he wrote some large works, he felt more at home when writing short dances and melodious, quiet, lyric pieces. He lived for a while in Copenhagen, and then he and his wife settled in a villa near Bergen. An attack of pleurisy left him a sick man in later years, but he still made annual concert tours to promote not only his own music but that of Norwegian composers generally. He is buried in. the wall. of a cliff over a fiord near his home. Grieg’s music is not world-shaking, but its charming tunefulness and colorful harmony have made him one of die best-loved composers.</p>
<p>Carol of the Bells Mykola Leontovych(1877-1921)</p>
<p>Carol of the Bells is a popular Christmas carol that was composed by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych. His English lyrics were entirely unrelated to the original ones created later by an American composer. The song is based on a folk chant knows in Ukrainian as &#8220;Shchedryk.&#8221; The rhythmic pattern has been arranged many times for different artists and groups, such as classical, metal, jazz, rock, and pop. The piece has also been featured in films and television shows.<br />
The first version of the composition was composed in 1904, but it premiered in December 1916 and was introduced to Western audiences by the Ukranian National Chorus. A copyrighted English text was created by Peter Wilhousky in the 1930s, and since then it has been performed and sung worldwide during the Christmas season.</p>
<p>Hansel and Gretel: Evening Prayer<br />
Engelbert Humperdinck  (1854-1921)</p>
<p>Hansel and Gretel is an opera by nineteenth-century composer Engelbert Humperdinck. He described it as a &#8220;fairy tale opera.&#8221; The libretto was written by Humperdinck&#8217;s sister, based on the Grimm brothers&#8217; fairy tale Hansel and Gretel. Humperdink composed Hansel and Gretel in Frankfurt in 1892, and it was first performed in Weimar on December 23, 1893, conducted by Richard Strauss. It has been associated with Christmas since its earliest performances, and today it is still most often performed at Christmas time. It remains an everlasting masterpiece.<br />
Evening Prayer portrays Hansel and Gretel as hungry and lost. Their mother sent them into the woods in anger after they accidentally spilled the milk &#8212; the only food their family had. Darkness fell, but before they went to sleep they said an evening prayer, asking for protection during the night.<br />

<p>The Twelve Days of Christmas<br />

<p>The Twelve Days of Christmas was written in England as one of the “catechism songs” to help young Catholics learn the tenets of their faith.  It is an English Christmas carol that enumerates a series of increasingly grand gifts given on the 12 days of Christmas.   The twelve days mentioned in the song start on Christmas Day, or in some traditions, the day after Christmas Day (Boxing Day or St. Stephen’s Day), or the Feast of the Epiphany (January 6).<br />
Although the specific origins of the chant are not known, it possibly began as a Twelfth Night “memories-and-forfeits” game, in which a leader recited a verse, each of the players repeated the verse, the leader added another verse, and so on until one of the players made a mistake.  The player who erred had to then pay a penalty.  This is how the game is offered in its earliest known printed version&#8211;in the children’s book Mirth without Mischief&#8211;published in England.  One hundred years later, a collector of folktales and rhymes described playing the Twelfth Night before eating mince pies.</p>

We support art programs and fundraising for the Kiwanis Beausite Camp, and we participate in local festivals including the Juan de Fuca Festival of the Arts, Arts in Action and the Dungeness Crab and Seafood Festival.  We support the Second Weekend Art Walk events, showcasing local artists. We have advised the city of Port Angeles during the planning phase of the downtown waterfront improvement project.
